Planning a Road Trip? Make Sure Your Truck’s Ready Before You Roll Out

Summer in Montana means wide-open roads, mountain views, and perfect weather for a road trip. Whether you’re towing a camper, heading to the lake, or exploring the backroads, now’s the time to make sure your truck is up for the adventure. At Power Train Plus, we help folks get their trucks road-ready every day. Before you hit the highway, here’s what you’ll want to check out.

Start With the Basics: Fluids and Filters

Your truck works hard, especially in the summer heat. That’s why checking all your fluids is so important. Make sure your oil is clean and full—old or low oil can cause major engine problems on long drives. While you’re at it, take a look at your coolant too. Summer heat and mountain grades are tough on engines, and low coolant is a quick way to overheat.

Don’t forget the transmission fluid, brake fluid, and power steering fluid—they’re all key to smooth performance. And if your air or fuel filters haven’t been changed in a while, it might be time. Dirty filters can hurt your fuel mileage and slow you down.

Tires Matter More Than You Think

Your tires are what keep your truck planted on the road, so give them a once-over. Check your tire pressure—it changes with temperature and can affect handling and fuel economy. Look at the tread, too. If it’s getting low or wearing unevenly, it might be time for a rotation or a new set.

And don’t forget the spare! You don’t want to be stuck on the side of the road with a flat and a useless backup. If your truck’s pulling to one side or the steering feels off, that’s a sign you may need an alignment. We use precision tools to get your wheels straightened out before you go.

Don’t Get Caught With a Dead Battery

Hot summer days can be tough on batteries, especially if yours is more than a few years old. If your truck’s been slow to start or you see corrosion around the terminals, it’s worth having it checked. We’ll test it and make sure your alternator is charging like it should. The last thing you want is to end up in a campground or parking lot waiting for a jump.

Make Sure Your Brakes Are Ready to Go

Brakes are one of those things you don’t think about… until you really need them. Before a road trip, have your pads and rotors checked out. If they’re worn down, they won’t stop you as well—especially if you’re towing or hauling gear. We’ll also take a look at your brake fluid and make sure there aren’t any leaks or air in the lines. Your safety (and everyone else’s) depends on it.

Stay Cool With a Working A/C

No one wants to spend hours on the road with the windows down because the A/C quit. If your truck isn’t blowing cold, it might be low on refrigerant, or there could be an issue with the compressor or cabin filter. Either way, we’ll take a look and get it working so your trip is as comfortable as it is scenic.

Check Your Suspension and Steering

Long drives and rough roads are hard on your suspension. If your truck feels bouncy, leans in corners, or just doesn’t ride like it used to, your shocks or struts might need attention. We’ll check everything underneath control arms, bushings, tie rods to make sure your suspension and steering are solid. If you’ve got a lift kit or upgraded parts, we’ll make sure everything is dialed in and torqued down.

Lights, Wipers, and Visibility

Before you take off, test your headlights, taillights, brake lights, and turn signals. You want to be sure you can see and be seen, especially if you’re driving early in the morning or late at night. Swap out your wiper blades if they’re streaky or cracked, and top off your washer fluid while you’re at it. Dust, bugs, and sudden rainstorms are all part of summer driving in Montana.

Want More Power and Better Mileage? Consider a Dyno Tune

If you’re towing a trailer or just want your truck to run its best, a custom dyno tune can make a big difference. We use our in-house dyno to fine-tune performance, improve throttle response, and even boost fuel efficiency. It’s a great option for diesel trucks before a long trip, especially if you’ve added performance parts or upgrades.
